On Thursday, July 10th, the National Governors Association (NGA) hosted its monthly briefing for the Criminal Justice Policy Advisors (CJPA) network. The briefing discussed the state efforts to respond to domestic violence, including the enactment of recent legislation and state programs and strategies for preventing this type of crime.
The briefing featured a presentation from Professor Neil Websdale, Director of the Family Violence Center at Arizona State University and Director of the National Domestic Violence Fatality Review Initiative. Professor Websdale provided information on current trends in Domestic Violence and Intimate Partner Violence (DV/IPV) rates, discussed the work of DV Fatality Review Boards, and the use of risk needs assessment tools in the field. Following this presentation, state speakers provided remarks on their prevention programs and recently enacted legislation. The briefing concluded with a discussion of effective strategies for addressing DV/IPV, how states can assist victims, and the role of law enforcement in responding to these incidents.
